Today, thanks to Jim's foresight and Susanne's generosity, the Spears name will be forever associated with education and helping students at the William H. Bowen School of Law.
Spears did more than live his passion for education. Thirty years prior to his death in 2008, he dedicated the proceeds of three life insurance policies to UALR. That was long before this type of gift was fashionable. The policies were used to fund a law school scholarship in honor of Jim's uncle, attorney Guy Moore.
"Jim loved his uncle, loved his law school, and loved his students," Roberts said. After Jim's death, Susanne decided the best possible way to honor her late husband was through additional gifts to UALR's law school. The first of Susanne's generous donations endowed a scholarship, and in recognition of that gift a portrait of Jim will hang outside the Legal Clinic . A second gift, a bequest in Susanne's estate, will be directed to student scholarships and the greatest needs of the Legal Clinic.
In creating a legacy for Jim, Susanne is establishing a legacy to the couple's shared belief in education.
"I grew up in a family where education was 'it,'" she said. "It's where I learned to love learning, and it has been the greatest joy in my life. Money you spend on learning and education is money well spent. To be able to honor Jim this way is wonderful."
